Criteria to take into account when choosing your safety sneakers
Choosing the right model of safety sneakers depends on a number of criteria, which are either mandatory or highly recommended in order to work with peace of mind. The list of essential criteria includes:
• The shoe's level of protection: make sure your safety sneakers comply with the ISO EN 20345 standard. This standard guarantees that your shoes provide adequate protection against the specific risks linked to your working environment. The levels of protection for this standard are ranked into categories, from the basic requirement (SB) to the highest level (S7).
• The shoe's adaptability: consider your specific needs and job conditions in order to define the additional protection options for your safety sneakers. For example:
◦ a sole with insulation against the cold (CI marking) or heat (HI marking);
◦ a sole that is resistant to contact heat up to 300°C (HRO marking);
◦ a non-magnetic shoe for working in ATEX zones or in the electronics industry.
• The comfort of the safety shoes: opt for ultra-comfortable safety sneakers with a resilient insole, which is ideal for prolonged use in a standing position. Look for a model with a breathable upper to reduce perspiration and rubbing. Choose composite toecaps if you want shoes that are slightly lighter than those with steel toecaps.
• The durability of the shoes: choose safety sneakers that are made from robust, hard-wearing materials, or with extra reinforcements in areas that are prone to abrasion, such as the ball of the foot.
The advantages of safety sneakers
Good safety shoes provide effective protection without compromising your comfort. And what about style? That is precisely one of the advantages that safety sneakers have over traditional safety shoes, such as work boots.
Men's, women's and unisex safety sneakers meet the same safety standards and have the same technical characteristics as traditional safety shoes, but have a more modern, casual, sports-inspired style. The shoes come in a range of colours and designs (running or motorsport-style safety sneakers, with high tops or low tops). This is a real "advantage" in environments where wearing safety footwear is mandatory, but where the aesthetic aspect also comes into play. If you care about the way you look, you will also appreciate being able to wear your safety sneakers when travelling to and from work, without having to change.
Safety sneakers are specifically designed for comfort, breathability and mobility. They are made from materials that are:
• light and flexible, such as mesh for the upper;
• cushioning materials, such as EVA and rubber for the sole;
• have no seams in order to prevent overheating.
What standards apply to safety sneakers?
Safety sneakers must meet the same standards as other safety footwear. In France, the standard is EN ISO 20345, and the basic requirements for shoes with an SB marking are:
• toe protection: all safety footwear - including safety sneakers - must be fitted with a steel, composite or polycarbonate toecap to protect the toes against impacts and crushing;
• slip resistance (formerly SRC marking corresponding to the EN ISO 20345: 2011 version of the standard): all safety footwear must provide sufficient grip on slippery surfaces to reduce the risk of falling.
In addition to these basic requirements, there are other mandatory requirements, depending on the level of the standard marked.
• S1 to S7
◦ energy absorption in the heel: the E marking indicates the shoe's ability to absorb and dissipate energy when there is an impact on the heel;
◦ antistatic: the A marking means that the safety shoe is designed to reduce the production of electrostatic charges and dissipate any charge accumulated by the wearer;
• S1P, S3 and S7
◦ puncture resistance: the P marking indicates that the safety shoe is equipped with a metallic or textile midsole, designed to protect workers' feet against perforations caused by sharp objects, such as nails or metal debris;
• S2 to S7
◦ water-repellent upper material: the WPA marking indicates that the material used for the shoe's upper protects against moisture and water for a limited period of time;
• S6 and S7
◦ waterproofing: a safety shoe with WR is resistant to water penetration.
Good to know: these mandatory requirements may be supplemented by additional requirements, such as resistance to contact heat (HRO marking) or dissipation of electrostatic charges (ESD standard).
